Also, Dr. Toriumi made my nose extra crooked -- it was slightly crooked when I went to him. Plus, he cut wedges out of my nostrils that left my nostrils deformed and scarred. I am less than a month out from my Calvert surgery, but I already feel a million times more presentable and attractive than I did even two years out from my Toriumi surgery. Many of us Toriumi victims call Dr. Toriumi's office a nightmare factory.

I was left with a bulky rib filled nose that is painful rock hard and esthetically disgusting...My nose was lengthened and doubled in width ,the left side looks completely different to the right side...All of this was done without my consent...Did not resemble the imaging in the slightest...I was absolutely devestated when the dressing came off my nose...and to add insult to injury I paid 30,000 thousand dollars to be disfigured..This doctor was not honest with me...I have since discovered he is not a cosmetic surgeon but an ENT...I foolishly thought I had done my homework and assumed at these prices I was getting the best..unfortunately I could not have been more wrong...If you are going for the Neanderthal look he is your man....Please do not be fooled by good marketing...I sincerely do not want another person to go through the pain this man has caused me and my family...If this post saves even one person from this trauma it will be worth it....

I went to Dr. Toriumi for a revision rhinoplasty after consulting with 5 top doctors in the field of rhinoplasty. I concluded that since he was the top rhinoplasty surgeon in the world that he must be the best. On his website, his pictures of his noses looked very natural and not done at all. All of the doctors including Toriumi believed that my nose was not in that bad of shape but just needed a little tweaking.
I did not get a little tweaking done to my nose. I got a major overhaul. Dr. Toriumi's method is to replace everything whether it works or not. How would you feel if you took your car to get a tail pipe fixed and you got a completely different engine? This is what he does with noses. The noses he makes are large and not tapered to the individual. Small features do not look good with large noses. He does not take this into consideration.
A doctor's number one responsibility is To Do No Harm. Dr. Toriumi causes irreversable changes to the nose. He tells you this after you tell him all of your problems that you are having after his surgery. Many other surgeons will not operate on a nose that has previously been operated on by Toriumi because of the extensive grafts that he puts into your nose. He leaves you feeling hopeless because he tells you no one can fix it and if they try your nose will fall apart.
I cannot breathe out of my nose properly anymore. The skin on my nose and pores have stretched beyond their compacity. I have constant pain in my nostril from a graft poking through. I have extra rib cartilage stored in my head that still hurts and makes it difficult to wear glasses. Worst of all is that my nose looks hideous. Dr. Toriumi does not care about any of these problems. He does not care about you period. He is rude, manipulative, and treats you like a child.
This was the absolutely the worst decision I have ever made in my life. My face does not look anything like it use to. I do not wish this on anyone. At one time, I think Dr. Toriumi was a great surgeon but not anymore. He treats his patients like lab rats experimenting different techniques. Funny thing, I actually think lab rats have the better end of the deal particularly if your results don't turn out well.

I had a revision rhinoplasty with Dr. Dean Toriumi in Chicago over a year ago. I asked him to make minor changes to my nose. He determined that I would need rib cartilage added to the tip of my nose to lengthen it a bit because it was too short and also the bridge would be made thinner. I agreed to these changes. I was concerned that he may lengthen it too much so I brought in pictures to illustrate what I wanted and didn't want. He agreed. Before surgery, I asked him what I should expect post-op. He told me that my nose would be very, very swollen for a year. That's all he said.
What I got was very different than what we agreed on, aside from the outrageous swelling. He DID NOT tell me he was going to completely rebuild my nose with rib graphs. My nose is rock hard! It even gets in the way when I kiss my husband. It does not move when I smile or if I attempt to manually move it. He DID NOT tell me he was going to put a graph on my columella, the strip between my nostrils, that doesn't allow my nose to move up and down AT ALL. He DID NOT tell me about the graphs he put on the sides of my nose that are so thick that they interfere with my breathing and don't allow me to clean out my nose without the use of Qtips.
I feel that it was deceptive that he did not thoroughly explain these things to me let alone mention any of them. Those things aside, my aesthetic results are hideous. He projected my nose when he said he was going to de-project it. It is much, much wider than it was before. Finally, the tip is horrible. He made my tip an extremely wide, undefined blob, when it was supposed to be thinner and more defined. To top it off, he charges an obscene amount of money for the procedure. I was under the impression that he was one of the best rhinoplasty surgeons in the world and based on this he could charge these amounts.
Unfortunately, my assumption turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life!! Being that he was recognized as a top Doctor, my expectation was that his practice and procedures would be of the highest ethical standard. However, I feel he relied on his reputation and was purposely ambiguous in order to facilitate his research and further his practice without consideration to his patient.
The past year has been horrible. I cannot get used to looking at myself in the mirror even after all this time. I am making this report to warn others so they do not have to go through this.

I went to Dr. Toriumi for a nose revision, something that was not too hard to fix except for a few minor things. I previously had a bad rhinoplasty in in 2005 that left me with a collapsed tip, I basically needed rebuilding only on my tip. I came across Dr. Toriumi through boards and through his website. Everyone claimed at that time that he was "the best revision doctor in the world" and so I trusted in this and also by his good revision pictures on his website; which according to me are completely outdated and do not reflect the work he does now, which is horrible.
My experience with him has been an eye opener and very dissapointing. He is not the "best" as people believe he is. My nose is worse off than before. I had a bad rhinoplasty and after going to him I came out worse, with a worse looking nose, twisted, my rib graft warped, my tip crooked, and my supratip crooked, I came out way worse than before, my nose had always been straight and pretty symmetrical. I wish I had never gone to him. He completely ripped me off and made me much more less attractive after having paid him out of pocket $20,000 for his cosmetic fee. I dont understand why he practices plastic surgery when in fact he is not certified in plastic surgery but is only an ENT specialist who has no sense of aesthetic taste.
He claims on his webpage that he does not have a standard aesthetic when in fact he does have "his own standard aesthetics" which is a high radix, low deprojected tip, and a wide nose that is a overgrafted nose that takes years to deswell and maybe never deswells. He overgrafts noses for no logical reason. His techniques are not good and leaves many of his patients noses crooked at the end.
I've communicated with at least 30 unhappy patients with the same problems, such as crookedness that I have. Many of us had never had crooked noses before and after going to him the majority of us ended with crooked noses. All of us have been ripped off by this "doctor" who has been not helpful to us at all and has done more damage than good. My nose is more botched than before after going to him. He replaced my entire septum with rib grafts, my entire tip with rib grafts, everything on my nose is now rib. None of it is mine. Why he did that? I don't understand.
I had never asked for a high radix, and he gave it to me. I asked for my tip to be rebuilt but he did not rebuild my tip. All the things I asked this doctor to do were never followed through. He just does what he wants and creates the same "monolithic caveman noses" to all his patients now. Dr. DEAN TORIUMI is a complete RIPOFF!!!!

If you want to pay the most money possible to go to a doctor who will do the exact opposite of what you ask him to do, then Torumi is your man. He has the worst personality -- he is cold, arrogant, and spends less than 5 minutes with his patients.
He is extremely over rated due to the fact that he writes lots of literature on nasal reconstruction. However, being highly published does not mean he has the skill to back things up.
I went to him for nasal reconstruction after I was butchered by another doctor. Dr. Toriumi is considered the best reconstructive surgeon in the world -- or at least that's how is hyped to be.
However, maybe it's that he constantly changes his lab rat experiments and is continually trying new things on humans -- but for the past several years --he's created more and more miserably unhappy deformed and botched patients who cannot be fixed thanks to his Frankenstein methods.
Many, many who have gone to him in the past few years for nasal revision or reconstruction has had their septums removed and replaced with rib. They have also gotten alar base reductions -- without their informed consent. The rib instead of septum makes the nose crooked and veer to the left. The alar base reductions make the nostrils weird little circle shapes instead of the natural oval. Plus the nostrils are assymetrical and have very visible scars on the outside of them.
Dean Toriumi puts grafts in the wrong places. He puts alar batten grafts on almost everyone -- without trimming them or tucking them in. This leaves noses looking super wide and flat. He doesn't seem to know how to properly graft a tip.
Toriumi's aesthetic preference is for blunt Asian lookng tips with no columella and very little projection. Even though before surgery -- Toriumi promises to his patients that he will give them the style of nose they request, he usually does the exact opposite. He almost always makes radixes so high, they look like the nose is coming straight out of the forehead. The high radixes also make the eyes look small and sunken.
Toriumi is a complusive liar -- he does not deliver on his promises and he contradicts himself all the time. He has the personality of someone with bipolar disorder -- being that I have a psychology degree -- that is how I would label him.
Their are many better reconstructive nasal surgeons out there that charge half the price or even much less than half of what Toriumi charges. There's Dr. Guyron, Dr. Andrew Frankel, Dr. Norman Pasterok, Dr. Steven Perkins, etc.
Dean Toriumi is over rated and over hyped. There is a support group for his many unhappy patients who are suffering from post traumatic stress from what he did to him. There are over 20 people in this group, including myself. We are all trying to find a doctor who can fix the wide, crooked, monolithic mess that Toriumi left on our faces.
Dean Toriumi is like a used car salesman. He makes false promises and overcharges you for a lemon. Then, he blames his patients for their horrendous outcomes. He claims that they should push on the sides of their noses every day for 10 minutes every hour -- for over a year after their surgery. Then, when they tell him their noses are still crooked, he claims it's because they did not push on their noses enough. Or they didn't fly out to Chicago every 2 weeks for the year following their surgery.
(FYI -- If one flies out to see him -- he looks at them for about 10 seconds, and tells them to keep pushing on their nose. Then he tells them to come back in another 2 weeks for him to check on the progress.)
For a typical reconstructive surgeryToriumi charges $20,000 -- that's just his fee, plus an extra $10,000 plus for anesthesia. Then he expects his patients to fly out to see him for follow ups all the time. Toriumi is a mad scientist who has fallen off of his rocker. He's kind of like Jack Gunter who at time was also put up on a pedistal, but then lost all the respect of his peers and collegues after he continually botched people.
If anyone's interested in checking out what Toriumi's peers think of him -- they should call Dr. Richard Davis in Fl, Dr. Jay Calvert, Dr. Rollin Daniels, Dr. Andrew Frankel -- all in California, or Dr. Perkins, Dr. Golden and Dr. Guyron in the midwest. All of these doctors have been receiving herds of Toriumi patients for consults to get their Toriumi noses fixed.
Over two years ago, Toriumi sued a hotel (I believe the Four Seasons) -- for permanent damages to his hand. He got an injury that, according to his lawsuit prevents him from performing surgery normally. This lawsuit can also be looked up online. Anway, perhaps this is one reason he keeps messing peoples' faces up.
The photos on his web page are not accurate representations of typical Toriumi noses. He does have a professional photographer who uses special lighting, etc. to create illusions of a straight nose. But, from the many, many Toriumi noses I've seen in person at the Toriumi support group meetings, I can tell you the noses on his web page look absolutely nothing like what he really does to people.

For People who Need their Toriumi Noses revised: Definitely go to Dr. Jay Calvert or
the second best would be Dr. Richard Davis in Florida.
Dr. Jay Calvert is the number one best doctor for Rib, and he is a caring person who listens to his patients and does what they ask him to do. He is the opposite of Dean Toriumi who promises to do things and then does the opposite.
Dr. Richard Davis is also a very caring doctor.
For people who have been Botched by Richard Ellenbogen: Your choices are: Dr.Jay Calvert, Dr. Andrew Frankel, or Dr. Guyuron
See how Dr. Guyuron of Ohio can fix even the worst noses:
Toriumi cannot come even close to that with noses that are not even botched. Plus, Guyuron does not remove the septum and replace it with rib and does not perform unecessary alar base reductions.
The same goes for Dr. Frederick Menick:
Dr. Frederick Menick built a brand new nose for the man above. Toriumi cannot seem to even make a nose that already exists and is already straight look good.
Another Excellent reconstructive rhinoplasty surgeon to consider is Dr. Andrew Frankel who has beautifully revised many noses that were horribly botched by Richard Ellenbogen, one of the absolute worst plastic surgeons in the world.
This blog is intended to help people who need rhinoplasty. First of all: Beward of Richard Ellenbogen and Dr. Toriumi -- both of these "doctors" are greedy, arrogant, liars who do the opposite of what they promise to do and leave their patients with irrepairable and irreversible damages.
Second, if you've gone to Dr. Toriumi, the best doctor to fix your nose is Dr. Jay Calvert as no one else is as good with rib. Plus, Jay Calvert is excellent at primaries and all types of rhinoplasty and other plastic surgery procedures.
Third, if you've gone to Richard Ellenbogen, you may also consider going to Dr. Andrew Frankel, Dr. Guyuron, or Dr. Frederick Menick.

This lady looked much better in her "Before" photo when her nose was narrow and had a columella. Toriumi made her look like a man -- the "After" photo is clearly much less attractive. Yet, she claims to be a happy patient. So, you just have to wonder about the taste of the patients who are happy with their Toriumi outcomes.
